A Holistic Approach to Managing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Effectively
Understanding
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
How Is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treated?
cognitive behavioral therapy
Helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders, including phobias, addictions, depression, and anxiety. Cognitive behavior therapy is generally short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and emotions.
exposure and response prevention (ERP)
The Exposure in ERP refers to exposing yourself to the thoughts, images, objects and situations that make you anxious and/or start your obsessions. While the Response Prevention part of ERP, refers to making a choice not to do a compulsive behavior once the anxiety or obsessions have been “triggered.” All of this is done under the guidance of a therapist at the beginning — though you will eventually learn to do your own ERP exercises to help manage your symptoms.
Medication Management
Medications can only be prescribed by a licensed medical professionals (such as your physician or a psychiatrist), who your therapist at A Beautiful Soul Holistic Counseling will be working to develop a treatment plan. Together, Exposure & Response Prevention and medication are considered the “first-line” treatments for OCD. About 70% of people will benefit from ERP and/or medication for effective management of their OCD.
