Understanding Your Anxiety
how is anxiety treated?
cognitive behavioral therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps clients understand how thoughts and feelings can influence behaviors. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders, including phobias, addictions, depression, and anxiety. Cognitive behavior therapy is generally short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and shift intrusive and/or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and emotions.
Mindfulness Based Therapy
The focus is on increasing our awareness of the thoughts, feelings, and actions that hinder our progress. When we are better able to do that, we can engage with those aspects of ourselves, learn to tweak our language, and choose how to respond. The model suggests mental health may be dependent on a person's ability to detach from one mode and move between other modes, based on what is present in the environment to promote lasting change.
Emotional Regulation
Self-regulation is all about pausing between feeling and reactions, as it encourages us to slow down for a moment and act after truly evaluating a situation. Another aspect of emotional regulation revolves around value engagement. When we react impulsively without paying much attention to what is going on inside, we might often deviate from our core values and act in a way that may actually be opposite to them. By obtaining the tools to better self-regulate, you can gain the power to stay calm under pressure and prevent yourself from acting against your core values and ethics.
DEEP Breathing
Deep breathing increases the supply of oxygen to your brain and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of calmness. Breathing techniques help you feel connected to your body—it brings your awareness away from the worries in your head and quiets your mind.
DISTRESS TOLERANCE
This involves an individual’s ability to manage their internal emotional state in response to stress-inducing factors. If someone has a low distress tolerance they will likely become overwhelmed by mildly stressful situations, potentially responding in negative mental and behavioral ways. Treatment focuses around an individual becoming more aware of their internal emotions and how those emotions can affect their current thought patterns or actions.
